Types and Uses of our Metals
Types of metal typically used for our furniture items include aluminium, mild steel, stainless steel, brass, and copper.
Each of these has its own specific benefits and uses.
Aluminium is best known for its flexibility and lightness, including a high strength to weight ration. This is best used for special intricate frames, as it is strong and easy to work with.
Brass & Copper are a great choice for a specialised finish, creating a sleek look of modern or vintage. However, these materials require maintenance and care and may tarnish with age.
Mild Steel is an excellent selection for optimum strength and durability. This material is only recommended for indoor furniture, as it will rust.
Stainless Steel is very strong and durable material. There are a number of stainless steel finishes which can affect not only the appearance, but also the intended use. These include exposed polished or hairline finish. While stainless steel does cost more, its strength and durability allows it to be used for both indoor and outdoor use.
Stainless Steel for Outdoor Usage
Stainless steel comes in a variety of grades which can be used for different purposes.
Typical grades include:
S/steel 201: the lowest grade
S/steel 316: This is the highest grade which is commonly used in humid climates with high salinity, such as the Maldives. For best results, we recommend that the steel not be powder coated or coloured.
Choice of Finishes
Finishes are an important element in modern furniture design. Choosing the right finish is important, not just for aesthetic purposes, but for durability as well.
Smooth Finish is commonly used for decorative items. A well-polished surface also ensures that nothing is trapped in the surface of the material.
Hairline Finish provides a unique appearance of endless lines running a specific direction, as if the metal had been smoothed with a paintbrush. Variations may be specified in the coarseness and width of the lines. Hairline also has the added benefit of being anti-fingerprint.
Powder Coating is a high quality finish which needs little maintenance. Powder coating creates a tough finish which is more resistant to impact, moisture, UV light, and extreme weather conditions. It is available in an almost limitless range of colours to suit your needs.
Aside from colours, you can also select the best look including textured, gloss or matte.
Spray painting is an alternative to powder coating, and is ideal for products which cannot be heated enough to apply powder coating. Spray painting is more economic, and can also achieve a much greater variety of colours than powder coating.
Anodising creates a durable and weather resistant coat that protects the base metal of your furniture. The coating may be coloured to achieve your desired style and look. This type of finish is particularly resistant to UV light. It’s also resistant to mild detergents, making it easy to clean.
Metal Plating produces a mirror-like finish for your bespoke resort furniture. Metal Plating provides top quality in decorative items with increased resistance to corrosion. Different grades of plating may be required for outdoor use or areas with high humidity.
