Types of Wood for your Custom Furniture

Solid Wood Furniture is a term used to refer to wood made from natural lumber rather than manufactured from wood composites. Some of the most popular types of wood used for furniture include ash, beech, birch, walnut, oak, mahogany, teak, and suar.

Different types of wood can be used to achieve various goals in style and durability. Teak Wood is one of the prime examples of wood for outdoor use. This prized material is native to tropical countries like Indonesia, and is valued for its elegance and durability.

Most trees have natural oils within the wood. However, Teak manages to retain these oils even after being felled and processed. These oils help to weatherproof the wood, and also protect it from insects, fungi and parasites.

Natural wood can available in a variety of different finishes, such as rustic, fine sanded, orr stains of various colours.

Plywood and Manufactured Boards offer a high strength to weight ratio and can be used for a variety of applications. Because of the structure of plywood or chipboards, they are less susceptible to splitting along the grains due to nailing. It also ensures consistent strength across the length of the wood, and comes at a much lower price than solid wood. While plywood has many advantages, the wood is porous and not suitable for outdoor use.
Furniture made from Plywood or Manufactured boards can be finished using laminate or natural veneers.

Veneer is made from a thin layer of hard wood, of 1/8 inch or less. This layer can be bonded or glued to the wood below, allowing for beautiful pieces at a much lower cost than full solid wood. Since it is made from solid wood, veneer can be sanded, painted, and stained.
Laminate achieves a similar look to veneer, but is made of synthetic materials. This has a lower cost than veneer and is used to create very durable surfaces. Laminate is easy to clean and maintain, and great for high-use applications.
